Carols Organic Garden Page

Hi there, this page is for people who are already into organic gardening or for those who just want to know more. I have an allotment in Skelmersdale and this has been run organically for the last eight years.

Growing organic
1. You spend less on poisons.
2. You don't kill off benign creatures.
3. your veg tastes better.
4. Your garden develops a natural balance.
5.It's fun. You make habitats and wait for
creatures to come and live in them.
6. You get plenty of exercise. Weeding
exercises more muscles than spraying.
7. You'll eat like a lord. Have you seen
the price of organic veg in the shops?
8. You get educated. you learn all about
the life cycles of plants and animals
and how they interact.
9. You get beautiful soil. Organic
techniques build a healthy soil
structure.
10. It's kind to your neighbours.

Tip Of the Day
It's always a gamble putting the first beans and peas out on the allotment, due to the horrible habits of those furry little monsters, the local mice. I've tried soaking the seed before planting, that just seems to make them juicier and more attractive. I've tried germinating them in pots first and planting them once the leaves appear. That didn't deter them at all, they just bit off the leaves and dug up the roots and scoffed them. People have recommended soaking the seed in paraffin, but I don't fancy  doing that. This time, I made sure the bean plants had four good strong leaves before I attempted to plant them, and I watered them in well with some really smelly comfrey liquid fertiliser. The next day they were all still there. I followed up by spraying the leaves with tea tree oil in water and so far so good. There's a very cocky cock pheasant that has taken to visiting the allotments too, so I'm hoping my unusual flavouring will put him off having a munch too.

Poem
Spring

Light and warmth
Wakes
Breaks the winter sleep
Keeps the cycle
Always worshipped
A tangible god.
